Bingham Day

Ofsted Report

About Us
BINGHAM DAY NURSERY opened in 1980 in an attractive old cottage property in the conservation area of the historic market town of Bingham. A separate Pre-school section helps children, and parents/carers, to make an easy and enjoyable transition into mainstream education.

All rooms have qualified and experienced staff who offer an enhanced quality of loving childcare. A dedicated team, we fully support the EARLY YEARS Mission Statement, valuing each child as an individual. We provide first class care in a safe and stimulating environment with a well balanced day including indoor and outdoor play.

The Nursery still retains its unique, quaint, family atmosphere with the children in small peer groups. They are encouraged to be involved in a wide range of activities including sand, water, art and creative play, etc. Fun, group work and ‘circle time’ help children learn and develop confident social and communication skills, with the opportunity to join in and express themselves during role play, dressing up, singing and music making. Our regular trips to the library, market place, recreation grounds, community groups and also the fire station, which is situated directly opposite, always prove popular.

At 3 years of age, children enter the national Foundation Stage of Learning. This is divided into six definitive areas of learning (called Early Learning Goals) and builds upon skills already acquired:

Knowledge and understanding of the world;
Physical development;
Creative development.
• Personal, social and emotional development:
• Communication, language and literacy;
• Mathematical development;

Each child is encouraged and supported and individual Development Records are kept showing their achievements. These help to build a unique and personal keepsake of their days at Nursery and can be viewed at anytime. Staff liase with parents/carers on a regular basis to exchange information about their children, including activities undertaken outside of Nursery and progress made at home.

Children will be involved in special topics and ‘fun days’ to help introduce them to a wide range of cultural festivals and charitable fundraising opportunities. Often featured in local newspaper articles, the Nursery has an ability to help the children grow and develop by creating exciting and interactive learning opportunities, led through play within a traditional ‘village nursery’ atmosphere.

The nursery is divided into six rooms:

Baby Room
Here we look after the needs of our youngest children, aware that parents/carers may be facing separation from their little ones for the first time. Qualified team members are only too happy to speak to parent/carers throughout the day to offer support and reassurance if required.
We have:

• A comfortable carpet area with plenty of soft toys for our children as they start to explore
• A messy area for tactile exploration such as ‘Our First Hand and Foot Prints’
• A pram room for our much needed sleep time, progressing to individual sleep mats as they grow
• Appropriate nappy changing and baby care facilities
• A small kitchen area for preparing individual meals within the room

Whilst providing essential personal care and attention, team members in the room are also undertaking careful observations to complete the first stages of each child’s ‘All About Me’ files.

Nursery 1
A gradual progression from the Baby Room; the children are provided with the opportunity to explore a wider environment as their independence increases.

Our team keep very busy and introduce exciting new play and learning activities.

The interconnecting doors with the Baby Room and Nursery 2 help to build the children’s confidence when moving through the Nursery and give opportunities for integration and the sharing of facilities.

Nursery 2
By this stage the children are growing in confidence, our team begin to introduce a more structured timetable of activities focused on physical, intellectual, social and emotional skills.
The room has:

• A carpeted area for indoor play, stories, singing and music time
• Space for sleep time
• A practical floor area for table top activities, painting and crafts
• A kitchen area for preparing snacks and drinks

Development records at this age often start to show children’s creative abilities, staff offer constant support and achievements are regularly updated.

Nursery 3
As the children grow in age and experience they move ‘upstairs’ to Nursery 3. Topics are planned working towards the Early Learning Goals, and the children are encouraged and supported in each of the six areas of learning. Personal, social and emotional development is one of the areas concentrated on, with toilet training at the top of the agenda.
The room has:

• A large carpeted area housing a home corner, book corner and tables for small construction toys, puzzles and simple board games
• A large craft area with sand and water facilities
• Space for sleep time, if still required

A wide range of learning activities and play is timetabled, often coming together with Nursery 3a for group sessions, including story time, role play, music and singing.

Nursery 3a
The integration and sharing of facilities with Nursery 3, assists the movement of children to this next room. ‘All About Me’ folders show the progress being made within the Foundation Stage, individual records are updated on a regular basis and support is offered as required.
The room has:

• A large carpeted area encompassing role play facilities, dressing up clothes, reading corner and tables for more focussed activities
• A large craft area with sand and water facilities

As well as liasing with Nursery 3, the team take the children on regular visits to the Pre-School section, where opportunities for circle time help to increase the children’s confidence and allow them to form new friendships before moving into the largest of the Nursery classes.

The Pre-School
As parents/carers begin to think about ‘big’ school, the children are provided with a valuable insight into how life is going to be in mainstream education. In addition to the specialised day nursery facilities, children are instructed in the basic skills of reading, writing and number work. Older children within the group also receive an introduction to French and a PC is constantly accessible for basic computer skills.

The team, supported by our experienced teacher, use the Early Learning Goals as a tool to make the transition to school much easier for the children, parents/carers and teachers at the new setting.
The room has:

• A carpeted area for large construction toys
• Tables for completing planned topic work
• A large practical floor space for arts, crafts, sand and water.
• A separate home corner with role play facilities and dressing up clothes
• A quiet reading corner

Knowledge and understanding of the world is an area of learning actively promoted within this section, studying the environment, different cultures and developing an increased awareness of everyday life. Activities including baking and gardening are undertaken and regular visits into the community help to stimulate the children.

The Outdoor Environment
All the children have access to the safe enclosed outdoor play facilities; younger children make good use of the astro-turfed play area containing; see-saws; slides; play house; multi activity centre for climbing, crawling, balancing; pedal cars; bikes; toddle trucks; prams; balls; hoops; bean bags and stepping stones.

Older children ride trikes, bikes and tractors round our cycle track, stopping only to fill up with petrol or if the traffic lights are on red!

The children play with sand and water outside and also make use of the Nursery garden to grow sunflowers, beans, tomatoes and various other plants.

In addition to trips into the centre of Bingham, the children make use of the local transport services, including buses and trains, to take trips further a field in support of planned topics. Visits are organised on a regular basis to our affiliated MANOR FARM ANIMAL CENTRE AND DONKEY SANCTUARY, initially on a fun basis and subsequently educational outings are geared to incorporate the Early Learning Goals.

Our Partnership with Parents/Carers
As with all our Nurseries, BINGHAM DAY NURSERY operates an ‘Open Door’ policy and we constantly encourage parents/carers to feel that they can communicate freely with qualified team members.

Older rooms hold regular ‘Open Evenings’ to give parents/carers an opportunity to discuss their child’s achievements with staff. Notice boards in each room display menus and activities for the day, and parents/carers will often be presented with an artistic masterpiece to take home at the end of the session.

We welcome your interest, whether it is finding out ‘what sort of day we have had’, or helping to support topic work within the rooms.
